Carroll happy to establish DTM career.

Adam Carroll claims he is satisfied with his decision to turn his back on single-seaters to pursue a career in touring cars and the DTM, conceding Formula 1 is too difficult to get into.

Carroll has been one of Britain's leading performers on the route up to Formula 1, the Northern Irishman performing well in British Formula 3 before winning three GP2 races in two seasons with Super Nova and Racing Engineering.

However, a failure to make headway in establishing his Formula 1 career, despite being added to Honda's testing roster, has seen Carroll chase a different avenue, namely DTM.

Signing for Futurecom TME, Carroll is racing a 2005-specification Audi A4 this year but while he is driving dated machinery, he has proved competitive alongside his team-mates in the first three rounds, giving him confidence heading into his home race at Brands Hatch.

“This is a more professional championship,” he told Crash.net Radio. “In GP2 you cannot earn a living because they don't pay you and it costs millions. There comes a point in your career where you have to make a decision, but you still want to be in a professional championship and since Formula 1 is so difficult to get into, you have to look elsewhere.

“DTM is a very good championship though, it is very professional, the cars are quick, the drivers are good and great manufacturers. The programme is so that you can have a long and successful career here.

“You can get into F1 from DTM, but then it comes down to backing again. DTM is a very high profile championship, particularly with the amount of British drivers, and its big in Germany with great TV coverage.

Joining fellow GP2 refugee Alex Premat in the Audi team, Carroll insists the transition from single-seaters to the large V8-engined machines has not been so difficult, revealing as much around the tight Brands Hatch circuit with the second fastest time in first free practice and fifth in the second.

“The transition has not been a problem,” he added. “The DTM car is fast and has a lot of grip and although it's heavier and the vision is terrible when you first get in. it does feel a little bit different but you soon realise it is a proper racing car.”

“The season has not been too bad so far. There is not much I can do other than try and match my team-mate or the other Audi drivers and try and generally get the best out of what I have, which I feel I have done.”
