Carroll: We need to solve qualifying problem.

Adam Carroll was unable to hide his disappointment following qualifying for the fourth round of the DTM at Brands Hatch, the Audi driver unable to live up to his pace in practice on the way to 16th on the grid.

Second and fifth quickest in the first two practice sessions had suggested Carroll could spring a surprise in his 2005-specification Futurecom TME-prepared Audi A4, but unexpected balance problems consigned the former GP2 racer to the latter end of the grid.

Prior to the event, Carroll had set his sights on a top ten qualifying slot but he will instead start his home round from 16th, a bitterly disappointing result after all the promise shown in testing and one that he hopes will prompt his team to look into why he is losing pace between practice and qualifying.

“It has been extremely disappointing today considering where we were in testing,” he told Crash.net Radio. “We showed great pace in testing but when it came to qualifying it was like a different car.

“We just don't seem to be able to sort the car out or realise how severe the problem is, but I think after today it has opened everybody's eyes a bit and will make people react to the problem. The balance is there and I can do the lap time but when it comes to qualifying the car is different – it is very frustrating. I was very disappointed to not even get to second qualifying.”

Indeed, qualifying has been a letdown for Carroll so far, a status he is becoming increasingly aware of as he fears he will begin to get a reputation as a poor qualifier.

“If I keep doing this, I feel like I am going to look like an idiot. I perform from the minute I get onto the track and push the limit, but if we keep going well in practice and then struggle in qualifying, then the blame will soon be turned onto me and it will look like I can't qualify.

“We just need to learn from it and push hard from here and go into the race looking for a good result.”
