Premat leads Audi charge again

1 January 1901

Alex Premat has cast a wry eye on delivering Audi their second DTM victory of the season after emerging as the leading A4 driver in qualifying at Brands Hatch.

Premat has been a revelation for Audi since making the switch from single-seaters to touring cars this year, the Frenchman defying his year-old Phoenix-run Audi to qualify as the leading Audi at the Lausitzring and repeating the feat at Brands Hatch.

Indeed, Premat's status as the best of the A4's arguably holds greater weight here on a circuit that is considered something of an Audi specialty, even if Mercedes recovered to claim the front row at the end of qualifying.

Nonetheless, Premat was happy to secure a spot on the second row of the grid after a troublesome weekend that saw him spin off in practice.

“We found a very good qualifying set-up and we were quick in the first two knockout sessions, so I thought it would be possible to beat Mercedes but I made two or three mistakes on my first lap,” he told Crash.net Radio.

“However, I got a good lap together and I am happy to be the quickest Audi once again and I am hoping to do the best job possible for the team. We have a great package with the '06 car, from the mechanics, to the engineers, to the drivers and every time we go out onto the track we are very strong.

Premat is now looking for his first points of the season at Brands following a stunted first half of the season that has seen him crash out at Hockenheim and Lausitz, as well as miss the Oschersleben round through injury.

Even so, Premat is keen to finish inside the top four at the end of the 82-lap race and has even hinted at a potential challenge for victory too.

“My expectations for the race is to finish a minimum of fourth to get as many points as possible and to possibly get a podium. I think I can possibly win because I am sure we can beat Mercedes and I hope to at least help another Audi driver to victory.”
