Hakkinen: I still have a chance - mathematically

1 January 1901

Mika Hakkinen wants nothing less than victory in the eighth round of the DTM at the Nurburgring as he bids to keep his fading title hopes alive.

The Finn is the only driver this season to have scored two victories, at Lausitzring and Mugello, but failures to score in three other races means he is only fifth in the standings, 16 points behind leader Mattias Ekstrom.

With 30 points still up for grabs, Hakkinen accepts that it is still more than possible to come away with the title, but the twice Formula1 World Champion is under no illusions that he has to come away with victory at the Nurburgring to keep it a realistic goal.

“That is indeed a little bit disappointing for me, but I will not give up”, he said. “Mathematically, I still have a chance of winning the title, so I will be fighting till the end, and I have to win on Sunday.”

“I am in a very fortunate situation, because other than my young driver colleagues, I am not under pressure. Nevertheless, I am eager to do well.”

He is hoping though that the traditionally unpredictable Eifel region will throw a curve ball in the shape of rain, which has already disrupted proceedings in practice this weekend. Hakkinen however is relishing the challenge of wet qualifying or a wet race.

“Rain in qualifying would not be bad at all”, he added. “Generally, I can cope well with wet conditions. On one hand, that is down to our AMG Mercedes C-Class, on the other hand, it is down to my driving style.”
