Martin Tomczyk has targeted a third consecutive DTM victory after securing pole position for the penultimate round at the Circuit di Catalunya in Barcelona.
Wins in the last two rounds at Zandvoort and Nurburgring have revived Tomczyk's title aspirations and with title leader Mattias Ekstrom starting down in tenth position, the German is well placed to take advantage.
Indeed, Audi can guarantee themselves the title this weekend if either Tomczyk or Ekstrom can get ten points between themselves and Bruno Spengler, but with six Mercedes close behind the pole sitter, Tomczyk faces a tough task in the race to keep them at bay.
Nonetheless, Tomczyk was pleased to prevail in a tough session that started out damp and became drier in the latter stages.
"It was pretty strenuous, but I'm incredibly happy. The track kept getting dryer, which didn't make things any easier with regard to the tyres and air pressure. Nevertheless, we got everything right. In the last session, the situation was hairy.
“We were only able to set the times in the beginning, then the tyres got too warm and the air pressure rose too much. In such conditions, you also need a bit of luck, as we were able to see with the other Audi drivers."
