DTM would consider night races

1 January 1901

DTM series chief Hans Werner Aufrecht has admitted that he would be interested in running races under lights in future although he admits that such a proposal may not be easy to put into practice.

Both Formula 1 and MotoGP will host events under lights for the first time this season, with the opening race of the MotoGP campaign in Qatar running at night and F1 taking to the streets of Singapore for its first ever night-time event in September.

The DTM has previously run qualifying sessions into the night but never a race, although Aufrecht said it was something that could be interesting for the future.

"This would be very interesting for us," he admitted. "In 2003, we held a night-qualifying session, at the Nurburgring. Still, realising such a plan is anything but easy. You have to make for a good illumination, TV-coverage time - and it goes without saying that noise protection also is a topic when it comes to night racing."

Aufrecht also added that he would love to add another street race onto the calendar in future, with Hamburg and Dusseldorf having both expressed interest in holding an event.

"We would be delighted with holding another street DTM race in addition to the Norisring round and would come at once if invited," he said. "Certainly we wouldn't be the ones causing the failure of such a plan."
