Schneider ready for fond farewell

1 January 1901

Bernd Schneider admits he will face mixed emotions when he takes part in the final DTM race of his career this weekend at Hockenheim.

The Mercedes stalwart will call an end to his glittering career following the final race of the 2008 season having made the decision to retire earlier this week.

While not in contention for the title this year, the 44-year-old will end his career as easily the most successful driver in DTM history, with no fewer than five titles to his name.

“I will leave with mixed emotions,” he said. “I will miss the sport and particularly such fantastic events like the yearly DTM season finale at Hockenheim with the enthusiastic crowd.

“However, I don't have to go without it completely. As an instructor, test driver and brand ambassador for Mercedes-AMG I will keep in touch with this great series and also stay in contact with my many fans; I thank them for their support throughout the years.”

Mercedes motorsport chief Norbert Haug said it was a mark of Schneider's talents that he will go into his final race amongst the expected front-runners as he brings his glittering career to a close.

“The 2008 season finale will mark Bernd Schneider's farewell to active motor racing,” he said. “As reported comprehensively this week, he will however remain within our family as a brand ambassador and driving instructor for Mercedes-AMG. In the finale in Hockenheim, his last race for Mercedes, he has the same chances of winning as he did in his DTM debut for Mercedes 17 years ago – and this is always remarkable.”
