Circuit Park Zandvoort: Rockenfeller takes title as Farfus wins race

Mike Rockenfeller records his maiden DTM title at Zandvoort while Augusto Farfus won the race outright for BMW.
Audi's Mike Rockenfeller has clinched his maiden DTM title with a round to spare despite his closest rival Augusto Farfus taking race honours at Zandvoort.

Farfus moved into the lead immediately after beating pole man Marco Wittmann into the opening corner, a lead the Brazilian would never relinquish with an intriguing game of strategic chess being played by Audi and BMW behind the RBM-man.

Farfus, during the opening stint, went on to build a five-second cushion before Rockenfeller, who had also gotten the better of Wittmann, began to relentlessly eat into the BMW's lead – the pair ending the first pit-window nose to tail.

The BMW, however, was able to keep the lead by pitting a lap earlier than Rockenfeller, who rejoined in second, never looking in position to challenge Farfus on the prime and even fell to third at one stage behind ABT's Timo Scheider enjoying a sensational return to podium following a two-year lean spell.

Scheider played a pivotal role in Audi's strategic game over BMW in a bid to protect the Phoenix-man's championship winning second position. The former-champion allowed Rockenfeller back onto the second step of the rostrum before acting as a police escort during final stages which involved a safety car trigged by the collision of Jamie Green and Dirk Werner.

Mattias Ekstrom provided one of the star drives of the day to leap from 15th to an incredible fourth place finish. The Swede made the most of the extra option tyre grip to scythe his way back through a predominantly prime tyre field with ferocious ease.

Wittmann was the last of Ekstrom's victims in fifth, a disappointing end after starting on his first DTM pole.

Adrien Tambay earned his fourth points score in a row with a fine sixth ahead of BMW's Joey Hand and Audi team mate Filipe Albuquerque in seventh and eighth.

Gary Paffett was the top Mercedes in ninth on a yet another largely unsatisfactory day for the three-pointed star while Miguel Molina rounded out the points paying positions in tenth.
