Scheider wins after fight from back - Sachsenring.

Bernd Schneider drove his D2 AMG Mercedes to victory in the fourth round of the 2001 DTM at the Sachsenring. In Saturday's qualifying which was disrupted by rain, Schneider had qualified 20th. He improved to fourth in the nine-lap qualifying race and took the lead in the main event on lap 14 out of 28 which he held to the finish.

Dutch drivers Christijan Albers in last year's Original- Teile AMG Mercedes and Patrick Huisman in the Eschmann-Stahl AMG Mercedes finished second and third respectively.

Rain had started to fall at the green light of qualifying. Peter Dumbreck (D2 AMG Mercedes) went out first and took his first DTM pole position. When Bernd Schneider started his first run, the track's last sector was wet and he was not able to post a fast lap and ended up 20th. Marcel Fassler was 18th with his Warsteiner AMG Mercedes team mate Uwe Alzen in 16th position on the grid.

At the start of the qualifying race it rained again. Peter Dumbreck achieved a clean sweep while Bernd Schneider improved to fourth. Marcel Fassler came home sixth.

After a multi-car incident on the main event's second lap involving Uwe Alzen among others, the safety car was deployed for five laps. ''I was hit from behind, but I don't know by whom. Therefore I spun off and could see that there was another collision 250 metres away from me'', Uwe Alzen said.

Bernd Schneider, Christijan Albers, Patrick Huisman, Marcel Tiemann, Marcel Fassler and David Saelens pitted during the safety car period for their compulsory tyre change. When leader Mattias Ekstrvm (Abt-Audi TT-R) pitted on lap 13 followed by Peter Dumbreck one lap later, Bernd Schneider took the lead which he maintained until the chequered flag.

''This was fun. It was really exciting to charge through the field from 20th to fourth position in the qualifying race,'' Schneider said. ''I was surprised when the team called me in on the second lap, but the decision proved to be absolutely right. My strategy for the coming races is to collect points and defend the overall lead.''

Marcel Fassler who was third from lap 14 dropped to ninth on lap 16 and finished eighth. ''I suffered from brake problems and had to press the pedal several times into each corner, therefore I was not able to improve,'' said Fassler.

Christijan Albers had qualified third and came home second achieving his first DTM podium finish. ''I didn't have the right set-up for the wet in the Qualifying Race, but my team worked fast and hard to provide me with a perfect car for the main event. Therefore I could improve quickly after my early pit stop.'' Albers' team mate Thomas Jdger finished 13th.
