Junior joy for Sowery at Whilton

20 July 2010

Toby Sowery dominated the Easykart Junior class final at Whilton Mill but it was Thomas Grainger who was also celebrating at the end of the weekend after a late race retirement for James DeHavillande in the final gave Grainger the championship lead.

Sowery's seven second lights to flag victory in the physically harrowing 20-lap final around Whilton's fast but notoriously bumpy circuit also puts him in the newly invigorated title fight just eight points behind Grainger and six ahead of DeHavillande who retired from fourth place with five laps remaining and was classified 20th.

DeHavillande would usually have lost even more points but was actually helped by an attrition filled opening half of the race that accounted for more than half a dozen of the 28 strong field including title contender James Lay.

Luca Hirst, who had been Sowery's closest rival all day and even snatched the heat win by a tenth of a second, finished a distant second in the final, a far cry from his pre-final performance when he shadowed Sowery home by less than half a second. A massive ten seconds further behind Hirst was Grainger, who had his hands full with Jake Hughes following DeHavillande's demise but just managed to hold on to the final podium place.

Finishing fifth was Alexander Morris with William Lampitt sixth and Jamie Cummings a fighting seventh from the back of the grid.
