Gunn smokes Cadet field at Whilton Mill

20 July 2010

MSA British Cadet Championship frontrunner Ross Gunn made his Easykart debut in the fifth round of the 2010 season at Whilton Mill and blitzed the field in style.

Wasting no time at all in acclimatising himself to his new kart Gunn was simply unstoppable around the notoriously bumpy Whilton Mill circuit, setting fastest time in qualifying, winning the heat and pre-final with ease and then dominating the final itself by more than eight seconds.

But with Gunn not a factor in the championship battle the main scrap was between E Plate holder Ronan McKenzie and Tom Thickpenny, who came into the day tied in the points standings.

By the end of the weekend it was McKenzie who had established himself as the clear series leader thanks to a second place finish in the final and a retirement for Thickpenny in the pre-final, which meant he started last for the main final.

Despite his disadvantage Thickpenny still rose to eighth in the final in an effort to minimise the damage but still finished the day trailing McKenzie by eight points.

William Stowell finished third in the final and consolidated third place in the standings with Sam Faulkner, Zack Nickson and Kieran Wragg coming home in close formation in fourth, fifth and sixth, albeit nearly 20 seconds behind Gunn.
