Chandhok happy to put F1 plans on hold

Karun Chandhok has put the brakes on any rumours linking him to a race drive in Formula 1 with Force India next year, despite impressing on his maiden test for Red Bull Racing last month.

The 23-year-old – who should he succeed in breaking into the top flight would become only the second Indian to do so in the sport's history, after countryman Narain Karthikeyan – insists he is not yet ready for the step-up, and would instead prefer to remain in GP2 for another season. He finished 15th during his maiden campaign with Durango in 2007, with an immensely popular victory at Spa-Francorchamps – the most challenging drivers' track of them all – along the way.

“It's not rocket science that I will be linked to Force India,” the inaugural Formula Asia V6 by Renault Champion is quoted as having told GPUpdate.net. “Vijay Mallya [Force India team owner] and my family have been friends for a long time, Mallya has been my sponsor for a long time and we know each other very well.

“Of course we've spoken about it, but at the moment I'm testing for Red Bull and they're a team who are further up the grid. Not many people get their first chance in Formula 1 with an Adrian Newey-designed car, so that's a very special opportunity.

“I'll try to get another year of GP2 and win as many races as possible. I think we showed enough potential this year; I've won a race and hopefully next season I will do that on a more regular basis. If I could combine that with as much Formula 1 testing as possible, that would be the ideal scenario.

“It's quite clear that I am going to race in GP2 next year, not in Formula 1. We'll see in another twelve months…”
