Spain set for fourth F1 circuit |
A fourth Formula 1 circuit is expected to be built in Spain, to join Barcelona, Valencia and Jerez, after plans were finalised for a new track in the Spanish municipality of Alcaniz, located in the autonomous region of Aragon.
The circuit – to be known as 'La Ciudad del Motor de Alcaniz' – is a creation of renowned F1 architect Hermann Tilke, with the advisory input of McLaren's experienced Spanish test driver Pedro de la Rosa. Tilke has already been responsible for recent and forthcoming grand prix venues in Malaysia, Bahrain, China, Turkey, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and the new Spanish street circuit for 2008 in Valencia.
According to national newspaper
Diario AS, Tilke, de la Rosa and Spanish motor racing chief Carlos Gracia on Monday attended the submission of the final plans, with the circuit – now in its initial phase of construction – predicted to be ready for use by F1 test teams by mid-2009.
The layout is to be 5.3km long, including a 2km straight followed by a Loews-style Monaco hairpin.
