Sarcelles enters French GP race |
The Parisian suburb of Sarcelles has entered the race to host the French Grand Prix from 2010 after a proposal was submitted by the town's mayor.
With the future guarantee of the French Grand Prix likely to see it moved away from Magny-Cours after next season, the search is now on for an appropriate venue to replace it.
So far, historic venues at Le Mans and Rouen have expressed an interest in hosting the race, but Formula 1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone has vocally expressed his desire for a street race to be held in Paris.
Citing Disneyland as his preferred choice of venue, his hopes are likely to be dashed by Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe, who is thought to be against the idea of a street race in the centre of the city.
Nonetheless, Francois Pupponi, mayor of Sarcelles, has gone ahead with his plans, adding that the close proximity to Paris (around 20km) means there is good access to the area from the French capital, while the copious hotels and the international airport will also work in their favour.
"We are very well located," Pupponi was quoted as saying by
F1 SA. "We are 20 kilometres from the Eiffel Tower, near hotels and the airport, and well served by the highway."
The FFSA have asked interested parties to attend a meeting in October to discuss any future plans.
