Toyotas bow out, Ferrari struggles in Q2

Just two weeks after Jarno Trulli's podium in France, neither Toyota driver made it through to the final shoot-out for positions on the British Grand Prix grid, but the ongoing story is the deficit separating Ferrari from McLaren.

With no interruption from the rain in Q2, Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock had the chance to elevate themselves back into the top ten in the final minutes of the phase, having been confined to the drop zone by improvements from both BMW Saubers. However, despite Glock swapping places with the Renault of Fernando Alonso, neither had enough on tap to secure their place, with Alonso repaying Glock in kind and Trulli managing only 14th spot.

The pair - who clearly received no help from their superhero 'sponsor' this time around - will be joined on the sidelines by David Coulthard, who missed making the top ten on his final British GP appearance by just 0.059secs, Sebastien Bourdais and Kazuki Nakajima.

McLaren again dominated the session, with Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen swapping places at the head of the times so that the Briton held sway heading into the shootout, but Ferrari struggled to match the pace of the silver cars, with both Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa both feeling the need to venture out late on to secure their positions. The world champion eventually claimed sixth spot, two ahead of his team-mate, the pair split by Alonso and avoiding the cut by a tenth.

Mark Webber, Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld completed the top five, with Sebastian Vettel and Nelson Piquet Jr completing the shoot-out field.
