Rosberg: Piquet 'achieving nothing at all' in F1 |
Keke Rosberg – father of current Williams ace Nico – has admitted that he is baffled by Nelsinho Piquet's poor form during his rookie season in Formula 1 this year, after witnessing the Brazilian's strong performance to seal the runner-up spoils in the GP2 Series in 2006.
Piquet has been under pressure for much of the 2008 campaign, rarely even getting close to threatening the pace of double F1 World Champion team-mate Fernando Alonso and falling at the initial Q1 hurdle in qualifying on six occasions in 15 races.
That has prompted much speculation that the 23-year-old's days at the Enstone-based outfit are increasingly numbered, with the
Régie's managing director Flavio Briatore doing little to quell such talk [see separate story –
click here] and both Lucas di Grassi and Romain Grosjean linked with taking his seat.
“Something is wrong there,” Rosberg is quoted by F1SA as having told German newspaper
Express. “Piquet seems to be achieving nothing at all.
“A guy who was pretty strong in GP2 must be doing more. I don't understand it.”
The 59-year-old – who claimed the drivers' laurels with Williams back in 1982 – also sought to rubbish wild suggestions Piquet had been ordered to crash in Singapore last weekend, in order to orchestrate Alonso's victory.
