Williams: Vettel can be F1 champ 'in two years'

Sebastian Vettel can be Formula 1 World Champion within the next two years, provided he can get himself into a good enough car – that is the view of veteran team owner Sir Frank Williams.

Vettel stunned the F1 paddock when he became the youngest pole-sitter in the history of the top flight in storming to the top spot on the grid at Monza last month, and he left observers literally mouth-agape when he converted that into his maiden triumph the following day by consummately winning the Italian Grand Prix, held in treacherous conditions.

That result meant that, at just 21 years and 74 days, the German became the youngest driver ever to win a grand prix by almost a full year, taking over the mantle previously held by current Renault star and double F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso.

Undoubtedly one of the sport's very hottest properties, should he fulfil Williams' prediction and go on to claim the title before the end of 2010, Vettel – due for promotion from Scuderia Toro Rosso to 'parent' outfit Red Bull Racing next year – will similarly replace Alonso as the youngest driver ever to lift the end-of-season laurels.

The Spaniard was 24 years and 58 days old when he clinched the first of his two drivers' crowns in 2005. Vettel will be just 23 when the 2010 campaign reaches its conclusion.

“I think, if Vettel can get himself in the right team, he can be winning world championships within two years,” Williams is quoted by F1SA as having told Germany's Bild newspaper.

"Don't get me wrong, I THINK Hamilton is a good driver. I just also THINK that Vettel is better."

Personal opinion, mate.
