Kubica: 2009 F1 cars don't look 'the best' |
Robert Kubica has backed up the outspoken comments made by BMW-Sauber test driver Christian Klien that the interim 2009 Formula 1 cars seen in the first major winter group test in Barcelona this week are not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing ever to take to the track.
The designs, with a wide and low front wing and high, narrow rear one have met with unanimous surprise [see separate story –
click here], and Kubica concurs that the sport's new aerodynamic rules for next season – whilst they have been tipped to generate increased overtaking – have failed to take beauty into account.
“We definitely all agree that the appearance of the cars is not really the best,” the Pole – fourth in the 2008 F1 title chase – told German broadcaster
RTL, whilst adding on a more positive note that: “I can now see much more out of the mirrors.”
Meanwhile, BMW team-mate Nick Heidfeld has admitted that the Munich and Hinwil-based outfit's new KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems) technology is 'giving us a few more problems than we had really hoped for' – even if it does have some benefits.
“You clearly notice the added performance when you hit the boost button,” the experienced German told
Motorsports-Magazine.com after driving with KERS for the first time around the Circuit de Catalunya, “but it's still early days and we've certainly not perfected it yet.
“We had a few problems and, although it didn't exactly bring us to a dead halt, we often had to return to the pits earlier than intended. KERS is giving us a few more problems than we had really hoped for.
“If you're close enough to the man in front, though, it could be very helpful – providing he doesn't use it at the same time.”
