The BBC has unveiled its full commentary line-up for the 2009 Formula 1 campaign – with David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan joining Martin Brundle as the corporation regains coverage of the top flight after more than a decade on ITV.

Whilst Brundle – who has won the RTS Television Sports Award for Best Sports Pundit on a record four occasions for his witty and insightful commentary since retiring following 158 grand prix starts at the end of the 1996 season – confirmed his return to Auntie last week [see separate story – click here], fans have still been waiting with baited breath to find out who else will be on-board. That wait is now over.

Brundle will reprise his popular commentating duties alongside Radio Five Live football favourite Jonathan Legard – the station's motor racing correspondent from 1997 to 2004 – in place of James Allen.

Recently-retired Red Bull Racing ace Coulthard and former Jordan Grand Prix owner Jordan will work as studio pundits alongside erstwhile Beijing Olympics, Euro 2008 and children's presenter Jake Humphrey.

“After 15 seasons competing in F1, my passion for the sport is still very much alive,” Coulthard is quoted as having said by the BBC website of his first foray into broadcasting. “Therefore I was delighted to be given the opportunity to share my views and experiences through the BBC coverage of F1.

“Many of the BBC team are known to me already and, for those members new to F1, I look forward to building on the established audience of F1 fans in the UK.”

Ted Kravitz will continue his ITV role as pit-lane reporter alongside new addition Lee McKenzie, the daughter of long-time Daily Express F1 correspondent Bob McKenzie and former ITV and Sky Sports presenter taking over the reins from Louise Goodman.

In a further surprise, much-loved veteran commentator Murray Walker – who only last week questioned whether the BBC will do as good a job as ITV in its coverage of the sport [see separate story – click here] – will be back to offer fans his views with a slot on a Q&A forum on the Sport website.

The Beeb's contract to show F1 is set to initially run for five years until the end of the 2013 campaign, with exclusive rights for TV, radio, online and mobile. Further details are set to be revealed in the New Year.

“We have put a fantastic team together and are delighted to be able to offer a comprehensive and engaging Formula 1 experience,” enthused BBC head of F1 Niall Sloane. “This is an exciting sport, and we are very much looking forward to next year.”
