Kubica: BMW wasn't chasing same goal as me

Despite having pledged his future to the team in 2009, Robert Kubica has renewed his public attack on BMW-Sauber, blaming the squad's drop-off in form over the latter stages of the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship campaign on the fact that the two 'were not pursuing the same goal'.

The Pole was an unexpected title contender for the majority of the season – even leading the standings in the wake of his superb breakthrough victory in the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal back in June – but despite a consistently impressive campaign he slipped out of the fight following a lowly sixth place finish in the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, the penultimate meeting on the 18-race calendar.

Worse still, he would end proceedings fourth, pipped to the 'bronze medal' in the final reckoning by 2007 F1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen after finishing outside the points in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.

Indeed, on a number of occasions over the latter part of the season, Kubica outwardly voiced his frustrations at BMW, claiming that the team was devoting too much time and focus in an effort to rectify team-mate Nick Heidfeld's qualifying malaise at the expense of his own championship challenge.

Though he will remain with the Munich and Hinwil-based outfit next year, the 23-year-old's negative commentary shows no sign of abating over the winter months.

“It is no secret where we let it go,” the man from Kraków told Dutch website Formule 1 Race Report. “We didn't develop the car as well as expected. Even Toro Rosso came close to us in the last races.

“It was not to do with money or manpower. Renault is not the richest team, yet it became a two-time world champion.

“This year we gave the maximum and had such a beautiful chance, but we let it go. In the last two or three months, I had the feeling that the team and I were no longer pursuing the same goal.”
