Fresh from claiming the 2008 Euroseries F3000 laurels, Nicolas Prost has revealed his desire to follow in his famous father's footsteps and race for Ferrari in Formula 1.

Alain Prost claimed four world titles in the top flight in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993 and – at the time of his retirement in 1993 – held the record for the most number of grand prix victories with 51 to his name. Five of those successes came with the Scuderia in 1990 – a season in which the man dubbed 'The Professor' missed out on the trophy by just seven points to perennial rival Ayrton Senna – and now son Nicolas wants the opportunity to prove his potential in a scarlet machine too.

The 27-year-old sealed Euroseries glory at his maiden attempt in the final round of the campaign at Magione in Italy, with one win, two pole positions and seven podium finishes to his credit along the way – in so doing etching his name on the same trophy that current Ferrari F1 star Felipe Massa lifted seven years earlier.

Now he wants to take the next step, albeit – much like Bruno Senna with his late uncle Ayrton [see separate story – click here] – on his own terms and not on the strength of his father's reputation.

“I really wanted to win this championship,” the ELK Motorsport ace and A1 Team France contender admitted. “I've been very consistent throughout the season and that's paid off. Now I'm satisfied, as I've accomplished my mission!

“I really enjoyed racing in Euro3000 this year, and I want to say a big thank you to all those who have helped me win the title. For the future, first of all I'll concentrate all my efforts on A1GP Team France so that we can win the title.

“Concerning next season I'm going to evaluate all the openings. Convincing an F1 team to give me a test would be a very important step for the future of my career. I hope this title can help me in the future.

“All the cars my father drove have a place in my heart. I know Frank Williams – he has a real team – and McLaren, that's the team my father drove for most. Like every driver, I dream of Ferrari and I would like to do a test with them, though I certainly don't want to drive for them just because I'm called Prost, but because I've done a good job.”

Those sentiments are echoed by Prost Snr, who acknowledged that having come to racing late – at the age of 22 – his son's chances of breaking into the uppermost echelon would not be as good as they might have been had he started earlier, but who equally hopes he can use his influence at Maranello to possibly open a few doors.

“I'm happy,” the former Williams and Renault star reflected. “Nicolas started racing late, but in the last two years he's made exceptional progress. He drives with his head and enjoys knowing the car's technical details.

“Now I'd like him to do an F1 test, though to get a seat at 27 certainly isn't easy. After this title the time is right. With Ferrari? I have a good relationship with them, so I'm hoping a bit for it. We'll see what we can do.”
