More awards for Singapore

Friday night's FIA prize-giving gala did not just reward the teams and drivers to have tasted success in 2008, but also acknowledged the events which showcased the heroes of the sport.

Among the laurels being handed out, two went to the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix, which debuted on the F1 schedule with a unique floodlit street circuit event which saw the return of Renault and Fernando Alonso to the winners' circle.

The Race Promoters' Trophy is traditionally awarded to the promoter who proved most helpful, in the most difficult conditions, and the unusual circumstances surrounding the event meant that the Singapore Grand Prix was rewarded for its magnificent effort in organising Formula One's first ever night race.

“On behalf of everyone on the Singapore GP team, thank you to Formula One Management for honouring us with this very prestigious award," the organiser's Ong Beng Seng said on collecting the award in Monaco, "Staging the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix represents the hard work and industry of quite literally a cast of thousands. This award honours every single one of them.

“The event would not be possible without all our partners both in the public and private sectors. In particular, I would like to thank the Singapore government, the tourism board and the ministry of trade and industry whose support was amazing.”

The night race concept also proved a hit with television viewers across the world, and Formula One Management took the annual Television Trophy for its coverage of the event. Executive producer Jonathan Nicholas accepted the award.
