Sebastian Vettel has confessed that, like many drivers in Formula 1, his ultimate career goal is to drive for Ferrari – a team whose resources, he admits, 'are on a completely different level' to those of his current employers Red Bull Racing.

The German – who made F1 history by becoming the top flight's youngest-ever winner when he superbly triumphed in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in September, and rated number one by Crash.net readers in a poll to find the best driver of 2008 [see separate story – click here] – has graduated from Scuderia Toro Rosso to 'parent' outfit RBR for his second full campaign at the pinnacle of international competition this year.

Whilst insisting that he is more than happy to be at the Milton Keynes-based concern in 2009, the 21-year-old has acknowledged that it would be a 'dream' if he could one day race in scarlet, and has admitted that it is only possible to become world champion – his ultimate career objective, and one many believe he is more than capable of – 'if you sit in one of the best cars'.

“It has always been my goal to one day drive for Ferrari,” Vettel told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. “Ferrari knows how to build [world championship-winning cars].

“They will be right at the front all of the time, because their resources are on a completely different level to ours at Red Bull – but continuity is also really important, and that's why I am with Red Bull.”

Though he has repeatedly brushed off comparisons with record-breaking compatriot Michael Schumacher, the man from Heppenheim would clearly love the opportunity to follow in the seven-time F1 World Champion's wheeltracks at the Scuderia in the future. Whilst dismissing suggestions his countryman could put in a good word for him with Maranello's decision-makers, he added: “I hope I will be making my own luck.”
