We all know that this will NEVER happen. Teams that threaten to leave F1 will be pacified in one way or another. F1 will still be F1 next year, and that will include Ferrari, Toyota, Red Bull, et al.

Off-topic slightly, but I really dislike those Mclaren wheel covers. I don't even like the non-spinning covers the other teams use but the Mclaren ones which stick out in front of the tyre are so ugly and its just not OPEN WHEEL RACING.

I don't like Ferrari, but everyone has to take a stand against the two-tier system and I hope they don't pull out. Who will be the rivals if Ferrari is gone?? I hope FIA is stupid enough to not do anything and Toyota, RBR, Ferrari pull out and Macca, Renault and the rest follow on with their own and a better championship! I'm sure it will not happen though. Someone will give and everyone will show up to race and all of us fans will bitch and we'll all still watch. So goes the soap opera of F1!

OPEN WHEEL RACING equals NO FENDERS! Not covers over the wheels or HUBCAPS!

The reality is that costs have to be cut, while Ferrari and McLaren can afford to spend millions to be competitive others who can't will see F1 as too expensive and pull out (see Honda) leaving small grids where two teams dominate. This isn't good for F1, we need new teams and new people coming into the series to keep it vibrant and moving forward. Without some kind of spending limit we won't get the proposed new teams entering next year which would be a shame IMHO.
I hope FIA, Ferrari, Toyota et al can come to some compromise, maybe $100M instead of $40M. Ferrari or any other team can't hold the sport to ransom but it would be sad to see them leave F1.

@luke, I applaud your sentiment but F1 can't operate in a bubble and ignore reality. The financial institutions tried that approach recently and look at the mess that's resulted. Eventually the bubble always bursts!

Any organisation has to operate taking real world economic conditions into account otherwise it's just storing up problems for itself down the line.

The bottom line is that Ferrari had a deal with the FIA nad FOM that whatever happened, they would have had a place in F1 whatever. Read the story.

The fact that Ferrari made a deal with Max and Bernie says it all. McLaren got fined £100 million for cheating, fair enough, but why didn't Ferrari? They were part of the problem....

As Monti said, Ferrari had a deal with the FIA and FOM, so that they had rights that no other team had, as they signed up to the concorde agreement. They don't like it now as Bernie and Max are changing the plan. Both Bernie and Max love Ferrari, and now it seems different. Boo hoo!

This has more to do with a two tiered set of rules than an actual budget cap. If the goal is to reduce spending then limit the technology that can be used and stop changing the rules every couple of seasons. Think how much the teams would save if they ditched KERS. The manufactures have the ability to design and test parts outside of their race team so how will it ever be fair to a non-manufacturer team?

Let me see....
Mercedes aka Daimler, huge losses
Toyota, huge losses
Renault, losing money every day
Ferrari, making a profit
Honda, already lost out

So, the companies that have three teams and supply the entire non-factory grid with engines are loosing huge sums of money. Have to cut costs where they can.

Sooo, either Ferrari go, or all others go?

And maybe people haven't noticed. 80% of the biggest advertisers in F1 are out of money and will pull out at the end of the contract.

It seems only Ferrari is able to spend like crazy. So we have a two tier system anyway if all stays the same.

Time for some realism in F1. Which is, if you go on like the last 10 years, it's RIP F1.

F1 is not local dirt track week-end warrior racing. It's the top of the rung in four wheel motor racing. WHY place a budget on the teams at all???

With F1 you get the most highly developed racing cars in the world. You get the Best drivers, The best tracks, The best sponsors. If you have the money, and choose to spend it, so be it.

I don't want any sort of governing body to come in, and tell me what I can spend on my business each year. I will spend what I deem to be the most logical amount to run the business to the best of my knowlege, to make it the best possible. If certain teams can't afford it, step down a couple rungs on the latter.
