F1 » Speedcar goes pop as financial bubble bursts

Hopefully the beginning of a trend as all these unnecessary series are weeded out and focus returns to those that matter. Sorry.

Unneccessary? I doubt the hundreds of designers, engineers, mechanics, drivers and team personnel in Speedcar considered themselves as such. The cars were conceived, built and tested in the U.S., and interest spread to areas new to the idea of stock car racing. It was an unique experiment up against a bad world-wide economy. Now, I'd like to know what other series you consider unneccesary? To me, all racing is good.

I'm not a big fan of stock car racing but it's a shame to see any race series go to the wall. Lot's of highly skilled people, some with families, will be looking at uncertain futures.

Just shows what a tenuous financial situation the world is in at the moment.

Couldn't quite work out what Speedcar was for. If F1 doesn't get the crowds in, ex-F1 drivers in stockcars won't.

Its true what was posted about un-neccessary series. We currently have various types of Formula Renault, Formula 2, Superleague Formula, GP2 and a few others all catering for "the step below F1" and its too much.

good riddance. too much racing with too few dollars available... much needed weeding out process in place...this economy will luckily perform a survival of the fittest task for us before we're made to watch has been F1s cruise around in mini coopers and get to wave a ridiculous trophy like this herb dude in the pic is doing.

Sure, there were many talented people working on this project from drivers to mechanics and back room staff.

The sad truth, however, is that Dubai was the wrong place to launch something like this! They could not give the tickets away!

I can only imagine that a few individuals made an extortionate amount of money from this and then walked away. SAD!

Whether you were a fan of Speedcar or not, as a spectacle it was good to watch. Normally run as a 'stocking filler' for other major races it always provided plenty of very close action on the track which is what the spectators like to see. Unfortunately, Dubai is short of those as we all know. The politics behind why it failed and who made money from it is pretty irrelevant, the fact is, it is one more race series which was 'quirky' agreed, which has bitten the dust...I enjoyed watching and photographing it and all the colourful characters involved. And, it will be a shame not to see them around the pits this season...Such is life though...

Unless all of the negative commentators above actually went and saw Speedcar, their opinions are just hot air.
Twice I've seen it as a support race, and it seemed to fit the ethos of Dubai culture reasonably well. As a series tailored to their needs, I'd say it was just fine.
Back here, sure it would just look odd and rightly sink. But then so should some of the club racing and national series that are just an embarrassment to witness unless you happened to be involved...hence why the only spectators over here happen to be at major international events. Should all club/national racing be scrapped too, on that basis?

It IS a shame to see any race series canned i agree, however Speedcar... IMHO was doomed from the start. It is ludicrous what is happening here in the Mideast, little money is invested in grass roots motorsports and everyone cries when no spectators turn up. Money should have been spent on growing an entry level series and supporting learning programs for young drivers, YES I agree that real talent was involved in the series creation, BUT was any of that knowledge actually transferred back to the region NO, are the engineers or technicians actually now going to build up our service industry,,NO - so WHO benefited ?? It was sloppy practice on the sponsors UP, who should have known better...
