F1 » Ecclestone to join F1 breakaway if CVC ousts him?

Bernie Ecclestone's position at CVC is under threat following his Hitler and Saddam comments, it is believed - as F1's commercial rights-holder perhaps prepares to cut and run with FOTA rebels.

Oh, the plot thickens!

I dont know if its a great idea to tag bernie along for a proposed breakaway. He has the contacts to make it work. But he also has the character of a stazi hit man!
50/50 on this!

BUT, if it means the end of Mein Fuhrer Mosley, then Iam all for it. He has stifled F1 with beurocracy for too long!

the registering of these new names could also be an attempt to PREVENT others (fota) from trying to use any suitable name, so i wouldnt read too much into the reports.

if bernie sides with fota there will be a breakaway... bernie has made a lot of FOTA members very rich, has the TV etc deals in place etc.

I don't think the FOTA breakaway would wan't Bernie ( the greedy old man ) in it.. It is one of the concerns of FOTA regarding Formula 1 that Bernie doesn't share fair the income of Formula 1. If Bernie be ousted then FOTA will have 1 less reason to have a breakaway from Formula 1.

As much as i detest the the dwarf, he is probably the only one who could set up the series in 6 months and make it "global".
As i said in a previous comment, its not a bad thing altogether if bernie is still there when max is cut out the picture.
If i were to put money on the the outcome of this saga, I would say everything hinges on Max running and winning another term as FIA president/dictator.
If this happens breakaway is ON!

The whole reason for the Breakaway is to get away from Max and Bernie. As robsurrey stated there's no point to it if one is still involved. Bernie would just do more of the same, charge the tracks too much money so that only boring tracks with gov't support could afford to be involved and take more than his fair share of the revenue. Glad to see those "smart bankers" at CVC are finally seeing what us fans saw long ago, Bernie must go! Bernie is just doing what he always does, play both sides of the coin.

The only good thing about taking Bernie along is that it would happen for sure. If CVC oust him then he will go on the war path against F1.

Using BE is certainly an option. Although FOTA would have to keep him on a short leash regarding how he operates and how much tracks are charged. However, being free from CVC requirements will mean that he could probably be a bit more generous than before. I hope so anyway.

The BBC sports web site say if Max does not sign an note agreeing to hold by the FOTA/FIA agreement. Then FOTA/CVC/FOM with go it alone with a new series?? things are indeed moving and the crunch date is this Wednesday. Max signs THEIR contract, or its good bye FIA. Now we know what all those chats with cvc were about.

forgot to add story heading on bbc website:
F1 row nears endgame

Well it wouldn't be all bad to have Bernie come along. As others pointed out, he has the contacts to get a new series up and running quickly.

Being a new series, the existing contracts in place giving BE so much of the revenues wouldn't be in place, so they could work it so he gets less. A new series also wouldn't be charging near as much for tracks since they are an unknown quantity (ie, will fans show up).
