F1 » Fisichella 'in seventh heaven' over Ferrari F1 dream

Giancarlo Fisichella admits he can scarcely believe he has been given the chance to race for Ferrari in F1 - more than a decade on from when he first and last drove one of the scarlet cars.

I did laugh at the suggestion that in 1995, Pierluigi Martini was a "fellow up-and-coming young Italian racing driver". Is it true he tested for Ferrari at the end of his career?!

What good news.
Ferrari finally put a decent driver in the car.

It's a pity F1 has become so corrupt that most of will now be thinking things like.
When was the deal done?
Did Fisi chuck a Spa win because he knew he had the Ferrari drive?
Whats in it for Force India?

Maybe we should just be happy for Italy, now that they have been saved the embarrassment of Luca in the car at Monza.

sbkfan, i presume that you intended to say NOT have a drive for next season?? he was being dropped by FI and was likely to retire. he now has a testing role with ferrari, and this will mean a lot to him. and david, martini was an up and coming driver, but just never got the breaks!

The Force India car only went well at Spa because of the lower aero run. At high downforce circuits they will struggle again, so his expectations were only good for Monza (maybe Japan) but back to normal at the other tracks left. Or race for Ferrari for the rest of the season. No brainer decision really.

richard, I didn,t know he was being dropped by force india, so I guess it is a good career move, plus he is alot older than i thought.so good or him, but I thought he would of had a foot in for a drive if he kept getting results for force india.

@sbkfan, the insight I'll offer is that most young boys have sporting dreams - in England it's to play for our country at football or, a poor second but second nontheless, cricket. In Italy its football or Ferrari. The pull is so strong, its probably been in GF's blood since he first saw a car. There will have been NO doubt in his mind that 5 races for Ferrari is better than another eason or two elsewhere, in fact I guess he might have gone for it if it was just Monza.

.....and for trivia fans, who was the last 'Italian' to come to Ferrari's aid at Monza? The (very) great Mario Andretti, 1982 and where did he qualify? POLE. (he came third in the race). I was there for second qualifying although sadly not the race, there were grown men in floods of tears just at his qualifying performance....
Even more Trivia, Andretti was born in a bit Italy that isn't even Italy any more, its now Croatia (I think)

Fisi has always said he would give up any ride for a Ferrari drive. Can't fault him for moving to F in mid-season. I'm not an F1 shoe or and Italian but I'd strap on a Ferrari in a heartbeat and could finishe as well as the last Italian driver. He does need to work on not whining about his finishes as he was pathetic after Spa. Do hope he does the Scuderia proud.
