chete. interesting point, but whereas a different exhaust shape should possibly knock off a few bhp. (or even gain a few?), i very much doubt that it would cause a problem resulting in piston damage. but whatever the problem, it has obviously been rectified, as, rbr had run out of engines and were relying on used engines, which have gone the distance.

The reability issue is connected to a different exhaust desing other than the original. this were necessary to fit the new floor diffuser.

Not only used engine that had gone the distance but got the fastest lap at the very end of the race distance.
Re the exhaust, the exhaust of the FI engine doesn't go bellow the sump level which is the lowest part of the engine so how can it effect the floor/diffuser why should it be changed?

I have read that Macca gained some extra HP retuning their exhaust pipes... so, maybe that was missing on the RBR solution.

The first poster is quite correct. They are sticking with Renault engines. There is no question mark required in the headline.

Renaults Remi Taffin stated : "In terms of the engines, we have not had any issues this year"(at Renault).
-Are RBR engines not meeting Renaults Quality Standards? (or faulty if you prefer) Let me doubt it.
Id rather think it is more to its different exhaust or -perhaps- RBR has developped their own mapping Ignition/Injection for the engine management to sort out the grip loss when accelerating.(this is a guess for its success. compare to Renaults poor behaviour!).

richard - re piston damage caused by exhaust system changes.

Airflow through an engine is related to exhaust system design. If fuel flow is used to limit engine speed, then an engine run on the rev limiter (esp in top gear) could experience a leaner mixture which burns hotter than a slightly richer mixture and subjects the pistons and exhaust valves to higher heat stress.
