F1 » Petrov ready to bite Tung in Renault race?

GP2 runner-up Vitaly Petrov looks most likely to be named as team-mate to Robert Kubica at this weekend's Renault launch in Spain.

I thought Sato was in the frame too? Petrov might be a 'pay-driver' but he had a pretty good GP2 season last year, so he's obviously a pretty useful driver. Not all pay drivers are cack. If he is quick and upstages Kubica, I wonder how Robert will cope?

What does it say about F1 when the only drivers in contention for a top team like Renault are Petrov and Tung? Surely there must be better options than these mediocre options. This is 2010, not 1995.

Is Renault a top team under Genii? Petrov isn't too bad a driver, anybody who can finish 2nd in GP2 can't be a total slouch. Incidentally, Tung would not be the first F1 driver with Chinese ancestors, Alex Yoong's father Hanifah was of Chinese stock despite being Malaysian by birth.

Are Renault a top team under Genii? That's a good question and I suppose we'll only find out as the season progresses.

As for Petrov well after 5 1/2 seasons in GP2 he should be expected to regularly beat the newer drivers to the series. Add to that he also had the best engineered car and full team support when Grosjean went off to F1. He has won 5 races across his years in GP2 and GP2Asia, that's fair enough. But other than that he's hardly had a stellar junior career. He is just a money bags driver. Does he deserve a chance? Yes why not. But I personally feel there are many other drivers far more deserving of the Renault seat.

Maybe under the new-ownership Briatore-less Renault, the second seat won't be the poisoned chalice it used to be. As GP2 runner-up, Petrov is deserving of a chance. If he has shedloads of money too, that should help get him a drive. Most of the teams in F1 seem to be near-skint these days. Sato/Heidfeld/Fisi/Davidson would to me have been better options, but you've got to let the new talent through at some point. Petrov is a better choice than JV surely?
