F1 » Button admits Ferrari are fast, but won't be drawn on new McLaren

Team-mate Lewis Hamilton might have raved about the potential of the new McLaren-Mercedes MP4-25 the previous day, but defending F1 World Champion Jenson Button was less willing to comment after his first outing in the car in Valencia

The surprise would have been if the 2010 Ferrari WASN'T quick, given that they abandoned the development of the 09 car mid season and pour much time and money into this year's campaign.

By the way, good to see JB's gone back to the Union Jack helmet design, but the superstitious among us might suggest that it's a bad omen since when he changed for 09 he got nothing but luck and more luck!

It's early days & yet we've the media trying to make predictions already. Most cars are still undergoing development until they hit the tracks in Bahrain. This year's season will be a most interesting one. At least 5 teams are in for the title.

One thing is for sure and the Ferrari looks way better than the mclaren, i dont think having VODAFONE written on the front looks appealing, they should get the 98, 99 mclaren, they looked the best, think it was west and mercedes sponsorship

My translation of Jensons comments - I dont fit in the car properly because Mclaren built it to fit Lewis and Kimi who are both much smaller than me !

Mclaren have history for making cars to small.

I sincerly hope that this is not the case because I relly want Jenson to shut up all of his doubters this year by proving himself at least the equal of Lewis !

The design of the tub will remain constant unless there is an overall redesign.
So room for tall drivers will always be limited by this.
The only way around this is by lowering the seat further or making it thinner.
Extending the tub to accomadate button would be design suicide.
I cant see McLaren making that faux pas, Button will be fine in that area.

JB's is the new guy in a new team and he's WDC so he has a different pressure on him. I think his comments are honest view of his first day. Jerez is the test that matters for all the teams because it as track with medium and high speed turns and elevation changes. Any aero issues will be on show at Jerez and you'll know the real pace of the car

powerline. in post testing statements, all teams admitted that they had tested all configurations, and this would of course mean light. they would HAVE to check handling on empty tanks, just as much as full tanks.

the truth. the cockpit rules were altered last year to ensure that tall drivers were NOT penalised. the cockpit of the mclaren would have to have the same dimensions as the brawn, and button fitted into that! it was also reported on crash.net, two months ago, that button was at mclaren for a fitting and confirmed that he was able to fit in comfortably.

@richard If that was the case, does that mean Ferrari was also running light? I recall one poster mocking that suggestion as an excuse as to why The Prancing Horse was blowing everyone away at testing.
