F1 » Petrov Renault seat in doubt as Klien, Tung and JV wait in wings?

It appears Vitaly Petrov may already have run into trouble at Renault F1, with his promised funding allegedly not all it might seem - as Ho-Pin Tung, Christian Klien and Jacques Villeneuve all wait patiently and expectantly in the wings...

Renault said they are OK with Petrovs contract.

Petrov senior probably is looking for sponsors in Russia, who could blame him. Hope he finds something.

Good luck

F1 is growing more pathetic by the day. OK, it's never been a showcase for the best drivers on the planet, but it's starting to look really stupid now with teams auctioning of drives.

It's getting embaressing.

Drivers have been buying their rides for many many years. It's very common. Merc even announced that they did not pay their drivers this year. It is the responsibility of the sponsors.

petrov came with the promise of 15m cash for renault. (oddly, this was denied only last week!). half was to come from a bank, courtesy of his old man. now this seems to be not forthcoming. as he "bought" his seat, he should now be honourable (dont laugh) and step down in favour of one of the currently out-of- work ex f1 drivers, but renault should not try and resusitate jacques of the baggy overalls.

Crash are late with this story. Another website ran it early this morning, and I've already seen comments from Petrov's management saying that everything is fine, and the rumours are based on a misunderstanding. Anyway, if Renault picked him for his talent and not his sponsorship millions, it won't matter if all his funding arrives on time or not. He's a better choice than Klien, Tung and JV at any rate.

I love the fans and realise they make the sport the global success that it is, BUT I never cease to be amazed by fan opinion and 'insight' where the story is without foundation.

Drivers and their fathers have often said and/or doen the wrong thing - think Hamilton, Button, di Resta - but it doesn't mean the guy is about to be dumped.

Do Crash provide a prize for the most naive comment of the day?

Another old story but if true Renualt are making themselves look silly. Many drivers have "paid" for there F1 seat before but Renualt are acting like this prize seat is available to the highest bidder. All a bit shameless.

Ha...I think it's very well played by Ye Olde Petrov. Promiss some cash money, make the team go all 'we selected him for his talent' on the media, then don't come up with the money and put the team in a difficult spot PR-wise to immediately fire him.

Obviously Renault F1 still are going to let him go if the money isn't paid, but at least this has bought the Petrovs some time to find the sponsors while he is already in the seat.

Maybe not the most ethical way to go about things, but very F1-ish. They'll fit in well with the rest of the piranhas.
