Amen to that! Mario's truly one of the greats - for the length and depth of his accomplishments and for his sheer class and dignity. Underrated by many Euro-centric F1 followers, his is a record to which the single-faceted grand prix drivers of today could only dream of aspiring. Happy Birthday Boss!!

Absolutely Happy Birthday Mario. America sometimes appears to be searching for its history as a nation but it already has it in Marios life story. At age 70 he is just under one third the age of the USA itself and personifies the American Dream completely. Followed him in the Lotus as a schoolkid and those memories never leave. As soon as he turns a wheel at Bahrain in the type 79 it will remind everyone of what an F1 car should really look like, long, low ,sleek, stylish and absolutely beautiful. Wow, go Mario

I met Mario on quite a few occasions during his epic Lotus days and he was always willing to take time to answer anything that you asked and always spoke from the heart.A true Italian through and through.Happy birthday Mario. :) :) :)

Sheer class.

Something I heard Mario said, not to do with motor racing, has stayed with me ever since. He's very intolerant of spongers/hangers on, but once, when in Brasil, gave some cash to a disabled roadside beggar. When asked how he could reconcile that to his less generous treatment of spongers he replied 'I help those who can't help themselves, not those who won't help themselves'. Wise words.

I've only been to Italy twice, fortunately one of them was to Monza on THAT weekend, the return of the King. The Tifosi were mental, ever word was either TOOOOOORBO or ANDRETTI! As I recall, the plane bringing Mario in was tracked for the last few miles and broadcast live on RAI2!!
