F1 » Mercedes 'will not challenge for podium' early on, warns Haug

Mercedes Grand Prix might not be right on the leading pace to begin with in F1 2010, concedes Norbert Haug - but the reigning world champions will haul themselves into the mix before too long...

Its correct of Haug to manage media expectations of Mercedes GP. With the return of Germany's most famous marque and most famous prodigal son together, there was also going to be hyperbole.

Personally I dont think the Mercedes W01 is a match for the Ferrari or Mclaren, especially on longer runs. However we dont know what they will be bringing to Bahrain, so expect the unexpected.
I think everyone at Mercedes GP will be dissapointed if, come Spain in May, The car isn't challenging for the podium.

FishFingers,

All bets are off, No one can say for certain what
Mercedes have.
I have it on good authority that Mercedes "shook down" 2 new Chassis at Rockingham on saturday. Apparently Chassis W01-01a was same spec as that tested in Barcelona recently and W01-02a was the spec due to be used at Bahrain.

Now the issue starts to get murky, because I cannot find any official timing for the ICCS rockingham track for the day. The Gent who kindly informed of this has since said the Bahrain spec chassis is 0.8 seconds quicker than Barcelona spec.
Its speculative, but he told me about this last friday and Mercedes showed up on Saturday, so he isnt a fanboy.....The plot thickens!!!!

I was waiting for that Rockingham test to be mentioned. Be interesting to see the times and what new parts are on the cars. I wonder if Haug is just playing down their chances. He is rarely openly optimistic and always seems to very risk averse.

I'm away to run for cover. The "good authority" phrase was used and that's like a red (Ferrari) flag to a bull for some. Where's me tin hat?
