F1 » Mirrors change confirmed, but not until Spain

FIA confirms 'Out-board' mirrors will be outlawed ahead of the return to Europe and the Spanish GP, round five on the F1 2010 schedule.

Maybe some stupid long mounts that take the mirrors out to that same or similar point as they already are? Might see some strange designs.
Why not have rear end cameras with a small screen in the cockpit. Are mirrors mandatory?

Yes, although like you I've wondered if they could use technology to improve them. Maybe they could have some sort of proximity sensor to tell them when they've got a car alongside them.

If they have mirrors I'd like to see them twice the size of what they use now. As for stupidly long mounts, I think the objective is to get them closer to the driver to make them more usable, and perhaps also to get away from gadgets like Ferrari's mirror mount which is really just another bot of aero with a mirror on top.
