F1 » Schumacher branded over-rated by F1 legend

British grand prix legend Sir Stirling Moss has questioned not only the wisdom of Michael Schumacher's comeback to top flight competition in F1 2010 - but also whether the German was ever truly as good as people perceived him to be...

Schumacher was fortunate to race (and win titles) in an era when all the greats had gone. Mansell, Senna (RIP), Prost, Piquet Sr. et al had all moved on. With those drivers around, Schumacher wouldn't have got one world title! He drove in an era with very ordinary drivers (Hakkinen excepted), with too many driver aids and a car far superior (at Ferrari) than the rest.

I usually agree with Stirling Moss. But this time I feel he is incorrect. He makes valid point about Shumacher not having a truly competitive team mate. But why was that? Pick up a copy of the 1991 Barcelona GP, first season, wet track, pure class. Belgium 1992, rain again. Nurburgring 1995. Spa 1995. Spain 1996, Monaco 1997. All these races were wet, leveling the playing field and Shumacher shone through. He made the others look average. The teams trusted him so much that the other driver became the number 2. He was great and it would have been nice to see it in China, but perhaps he is just past it. We will find out, but i do not blame him for comming back and having a go.

MS is an fantastic driver - possibly the greatest ever but I do agree with SM second point. I think MS can win again but I never understood why he came back. What was his motivation? to go for 8 titles or 100 GP wins? He's got all the money in the world and had "legend in stone" status so unless he wins and or at least podiums and beats his teamate he is wide open to this sort of comentary from former racers.

wazz. having no wdc does not make a driver any less worthy than one who has. stirling has his opinion, whether or not we agree with it. and you should check your history books. moss lost out on two wdcs by making gestures to his teammates and handing over his car to them, so they could win titles. that is enough to place him in high esteem!

@Wazz, silly comment.

@Richard, a good summary of why we should respect SM's opinion even when we don't agree with them.

All I'll say on this subject, as the no-favourites armchair viewer, MS has added NOTHING to my viewing pleasure this season so far, apart from an air of tragedy.

"People say he's the best because he has seven world titles, but that doesn't mean anything really. Well, it does mean something"

Stirling - your comments don't mean anything, well they do mean something, but then again...

Sorry, forgot this - the idea of being helped by not having a strong number 2 - logically, if MS was as good as he appeared, NO-ONE would be a strong enough number 2 would they?
And someone earlier included our Nige with the Greats - I beg to differ, he was massively entertaining to watch, trully brave in the car and the most single-minded sportsman I have ever seen (have you ever seen him play golf?), but waaaay too flawed to be a true great.
