Since Max outed Red for special veto powers and assistance Red has not been able to perform. They have become an average team. It may take them a few years to get back on track and feed themselves. They are falling back behind even the crappy Merc.

LetsBeFair: it's engineers who develop racing-cars, drivers only provide feedback, which may or may not help - depending on the driver if it's accurate.
However we haven't seen any of these skills during his "bail out" time at Renault (comeback from McLaren).
