F1 » Fernandes: Team Lotus is heritage enough

Tony Fernandes insists that, while he would like to see Group Lotus come on board, Team Lotus is ready to move forward without it in 2011.

This team is a new venture and it should have been given a new name. If Tony Fernandez wanted to pay homage to the original Team Lotus then he could have painted his cars in the green and yellow livery and called it Team Teratai, that being the Malay word for the lotus flower. That would probably have won over a lot of people instead of alienating them.

All they are doing is besmirching the memory of one of F1's great teams. I agree that they should have a new name and identity. They aren't the Team Lotus of Clark, Rindt, Andretti, Senna etc and never will be, no matter what they are caled.

I got a lot of stick at the start of the season for crticising the 3 new teams and saying they had no right to be on the grid. I was told that they had done well given the time available to them and that I should judge them in the middle of the season. Well there are just a few races left.

And they're still crap.

Rubbish fellanishair, utter rubbish. More elitist spouting which only seems to be found on Crash. Look elsewhere on the net and there's a lot more respect for Lotus (and the new teams) than here. Lotus have the setup, they have the drive and they have the ambition to succeed in the sport.

If the rumours are true and a tie-up with Renault is confirmed, I look forward to much eating of words here as Lotus make significant improvement. Team Lotus, utterly fantastic to hear that name again.

Fella, fair point about the progress of the teams. O was reading the other day that one of them (HRT?) was aiming to get both cars to the finish in Singapore. That's a pretty poor ambition for this stage of the season.

Ging: "Team Lotus, utterly fantastic to hear that name again."

If next year they hire a rookie driver who has changed his name by deed poll to Jim Clark, would you say "utterly fantastic to hear that name again"? Would you wax lyrical about the young driver who already has 25 wins to his name from 72 starts? Or would you say its ridiculous for a driver to try to claim the heritage and sporting record of a former great driver simply by acquiring the rights to use the name? Even if the Clark family has given their blessing. And how is a new driver using a bygone name any different to a new team doing it?

Colin Chapman, Team Lotus, Jim Clark et al were fantastic and as a more mature fan, these are the names that I grew up with and worshiped. But after their sad demise during the mid nineties, I never thought I would hear the words Lotus and F1 in the same sentence, ever again.

I too was sceptical at first but I have met Tony Fernandes personally and believe me this man is Lotus through and through, with a very humble respect for all the heritage. He has not just hijacked the name, he really is on a mission to put Lotus back where it should be....on the grid . But the only way Lotus was ever going rise again was with a benefactor like Tony Fernandes.
Lotus fans everywhere should stop any 'in-fighting'and get behind the team (what ever they are calling themselves),personally it's a dream come true .
