F1 » Lotus naming mystery deepens as Proton cosies up with Renault

It seems Tony Fernandes might be left with no choice but to back down in his efforts to rebaptise Lotus Racing 'Team Lotus' in 2011 - as there may already be another 'Lotus-Renault' outfit on the grand prix grid...

Good to see a manufacturer return to F1.

I hope everything goes smoothly for them with big changes ahead and they will have it all ready for February testing.

@ Greener02:

This explains why group Lotus (Proton owned) only let '1Malaysia F1 Team' use the name 'Lotus Racing' for one year, and are now fighting for the rights of the Lotus name. Interestingly, the Renault tie-in is with Lotus Cars, and NOT Team Lotus (As Colin Chapman was worried about if the car side of the business went bust, he could still have a Lotus race team, hence the two names).

Proton can hardly sell their cars to Malaysians. The only reason it still sells is coz of the Malaysian Government's protection by taxing all other cars to hell and back. They can hardly build a decent car after 20 years and have gone back to rebadging Mitsubishi cars.

What on earth makes them think they can make it in F1 when BMW, Honda and Toyota couldn't? Proton is nowhere near that level and should just go back to playing in the sandbox with the kiddies.

Leave Tony Fernandez alone and let Team Lotus thrive and continue towards success in F1. Proton should just go home and start planning on which new Mitsubishi car they wanna rebadge in 2030.

Proton make horrible little cars. But that doesn't mean they can't make a competitive f1 car. All they have to do is give loads of money to some good engineers. They don't have to make anything. And besides, for in house engineers, if they need to use any, they can draw on the lotus guys.

Proton owns Lotus. High profile sport cars. They belong in F1.

Lotus Europa is a very handsome sport car. Elise is a clasic.

Big step up for the team:D Good move from Lotus cars.

This pisses me off, after all the genuine effort Tony's put into making friends with the Chapmans and providing employment in Norfolk. To hell with bloody Proton, all they did was pick up the corpse of Lotus and now they think they can pass themselves off. We all know they won't put any racing expertise in, just money.Grr.
