F1 » Who has been the best F1 driver of the past decade?

So you've told us who you reckon to be the best driver of F1 2010, but who do you rate as the best since the turn of the Millennium? We've listed ten front-runners here - but who deserves the crown..?

Suppose results would say it has to be Schumacher, like it or not he was probably the best of the decade although flawed at times. Alonso would be a strong contender but other's such as Hakkinen, Vettel and Hamilton didn't race the whole decade so how can you judge a decade? Raikonnen and Montoya great on their day but had some terrible off form days as well.

You are absolutely right that one cannot include all that 10 drivers in a top of the decade. The only one who is exponential for the entire decade (despite of his 3 years break) is Schumacher (my personal favourite since I am watching F1 (since 1998) ). When you say F1 one usually associates this sport with Ferrari and Schumacher, at least in the last decade.
Nevertheless, my personal top would include only the world champions of the decade:
Schumacher - Alonso (although I despise him like no other) - Hamilton - Vettel - Raikkonen - Button
I would include Hakkinen in a top of the 90s. Webber was good in 2009 and 2010, but not impressive enough to be included in a top, Montoya was quite good in his times, but so were Coulthard or Barrichello. Kubica still has to prove himself in a top team.

yeah rubens or massa or even ralf has more claim to be in there than kubica.

tho i think kubica is better than all 3 of them. but if we are looking at the whole decade..

from the list tho in terms of impact on the sport id go with Michael and fernando pretty even. then lewis. then montoya and kimi.

Fernando Alonso, who else beat Schumacher(when he was in his prime)and without having the best car?
Alonso was and is simply better. Oh and Fa is the one who was active from 2001 til now, while Schumi skipped a few years and underperformed (in much better cars than Alonso was having when he started in F1)

I'm not a big fan of the Spaniard, but I must say that he was the best since he entered F1 as a teen. I hope Hamilton will dominate the next decade though.

Well, off the top of my head, the drivers that have been around all 10 seasons are:

Jenson Button
Rubens Barichello
Jarno Trulli
Nick Heidfeld (Half season in 2010)

Alonso missed 2000 and 2002.
Fisichella missed 2010.
Coulthard missed 2009-10
Schumacher missed 2007-8-9

Back closer to the topic though, I think it is between Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher.

Jenson had a great debut season, rebuilt his career at BAR-Honda-Brawn with a 3rd place in the title 2004, won a race in 2005, a title in 2009 plus 2 wins in 2010.
