F1 » 'Innovative' McLaren will provoke 'lots of discussion'

Martin Whitmarsh tells Crash.net that the new McLaren-Mercedes MP4-26 will be 'innovative' and provoke 'lots of discussion' - and with 'the best driver pairing in F1', it will also vie for title glory in 2011

Personally cant wait too see said innovations, mcLaren always manage to develop no and exciting areas within the rules.
Can't help but feel that McLaren are having the delayed launch in an attempt to make it more difficult for rival teams to copy said "innovations" The risk McLaren have is by taking to the track later than their rivals and should the innovations not work, they are stuck in a very tricky position. However we all seen last year how good the F-duct was and how it gave McLaren quite an advantage (in straight line speed at least) till other teams caught up.

matto. yes, but the problem is that when the other teams play catch-up, they have a fresh look and come up with a better solution! so it is a bit like a "catch 22" situation. the f-duct was innovative, but mclaren didnt win the wcc!

Totally agree with you Richard, thats why i believe they are hanging the launch date out slightly further. Not only to prolong the other teams seeing their car, but to also get a decent look at their challangers' wagons as well.

That's all fine and it could work for them, but it could be also a sign of trouble. McLaren has not develped a top car in a while, yes there were close, and they have ever increasing pressure to deliver. While they have extra time to hone the new car while running the interim car at Valencia session the Feb 4th date does not leave them enough time to tie all the loose ends in my opinion.

Red Bull didn't make the first test last year and we see how they were penalized by not doing so. A few on the board here getting a little giddy making predictions on the McL. As they should be. A red team in particular said they were nervous that some teams would take the new package and carry it too far.

Rob, Red Bull didn't make the first test last year because the car wasn't ready, the argument of how good the car turned out to be doesn't hold any water.
They only know for sure that they had such a good car was only after proofing it on track.
