Crash structure rules were clarified mid season last year outlawing airbox intakes like the mercedes, although variations of the design have been incorporated to this years cars, they are still housed in the traditional intake

the airbox is not part of the crash structure, and there was no modification made to the rules on roll over protection. there was talk of the twg clarifying the airbox requirement, but this was not carried through

Didn't last year's airbox have something to do with the now illegal F-duct?

While I still have trouble with the look of the oversized front wing and the undersized rear wing I really like the look of the sidepods on this car.

Ok, the structure under the airbox is the crash structure/roll over hoop, which is tested in FIA Crash testing! , and there were changes to the regulations I'm 99% sure of it! I think it was the same time they banned shark fin engine covers

I'm sure it was something to do with the FIA not being happy with the fin style roll over bar. It was about mid-season that I heard it during one of the commentarys so maybe the FIA have altered their opinion since then.

Fact remains though, this Merc is one ugly brute!!

That is last year's front wing, all teams avoid showing new front & rear before test days (or even race days) almost as a matter of course. Fewer chances for the competition to get a good steamy gawk.
