Renault (at that time) needed Kubica badly. They won against a few different teams who wanted the Kub. Kub demanded of them to agree on his rallying. If they did not perhaps he would never had sign a deal with them.

I don't know if Lauda used word "Polacke" later, I don't think so.
Personally, I don't think that Lauda wanted to say sth offensive, maybe for him this word was neutral, however reaction of the second commentator, Florian Koenig (he was suprised by this word, and maybe even disgusted) clearly shows that "Polacke" can be considered an offensive word.
Lauda justified himself that in Austria this word is neutral. But in Germany it's definitely not.
Anyway, I think Kubica is a bit of an old-style driver, who has gasoline instead of blood and loves to drive more than anything else in life. And for a driver it's less unreasonable to injure himself in a rally accident than playing tennis or riding a bike. Let's just hope Kubica will return as strong as he was.

A F1 driver would have to run on adrenaline when you consider their occupation. So regardless of what they do outside of F1 they will be pushing it for the same adrenaline rush. Any driver can be injured doing non F1 activities like Jet skiing, mountain bike riding (Webber), motorcycling (Schuey). They have to get on with life, not sit at home wrapped in cotton wool until the F1 season kicks off. Grow up Lauda.
