F1 » Webber 'as good as' Vettel, says Red Bull boss

Ahead of the F1 2011 World Championship campaign, Dietrich Mateschitz contends that Mark Webber is 'as good as' team-mate Sebastian Vettel - and admits that were the young German to wish to leave Red Bull Racing, the team would not stand in his way

Mr short-pants world champ is trying to renegotiate his contract, apparently. This is nothing more than negotiation.

Not much question that Vettel is the faster of the pair and will continue to improve, though I'd dearly like to see Webbo dominate.

No question that Webber would be a better World Champion (the way he comes across in interviews,Vettel seems cocky)

If I was Red Bull and I wanted to build a brand, not only an F1 team I would prefer Webber to be my team leader.

A twenty something world champion who dares be cocky - my word! At least his cockyness seems justified - Webber is often spouting off.....

Vettel is simply class, Webber is a solid driver, very good just not exceptional. Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel are the class of the field.

Roll on 2011!

Webber is a great driver and I'm glad someone high in the team is supporting him...

I'd just love to see Marko go... I can't stand him and the way he defends Vettel constantly and makes up excuses for him...

But Webber would make a a great World Champion for the team and a great World Champion for the sport.

I've posted it before, and I'll post it again:
Throughout 2010 Webber was at a disadvantage to Vettel due to each drivers' weight. Driver + car weighed the same, though Vettel was able to use balast to balance the car and Webber was not in order to exactly meet minimum weight. This balast balance was reportedly good for a tenth a lap.

Now recall the Japanese GP where Webber qualified inside 7 hundredths of Vettel. Helmut Marko was apparently quoted as saying "Ooh, that's much too close".

My hope for 2011 is that the increased weight of KERS will negate Vettels advantage and Webber can prove he is as good as Vettel where it counts: race results.
