Whitmarsh is smart, more than his drivers. But I wouldn't bet for a McLaren driver in Australia. But when the season begins in Europe,McLaren will be very strong,or at least I believe so.

I get the distinct impression that McLaren are sandbagging, not wanting to show their hand before Melbourne.
There are going to be more than a few surprises this season.

If Mcl have a cr*p season then Whitmash is fired - 100%. They have a massive budget, lots of resources and very smart people working for them. They should be setting the pace. They've also got two very good and different drivers who both think the car not fast enough. If they don't get a good finish in Melbourne the knives will be out for Whitmarsh

As long as they are quicker than lotus and mercedes etc they're not in too much bother. They've built a reputation of being one of (if not) the best teams at developing their car over the year. If they can take some 4/5 places from these opening rounds with Webber, Vettel and Alonso taking points off each other and get the car sorted for the start of the european season it'll be far from a disaster. As shown last season with 19/20 races you can still compete for the championship even if you do have a period in the season where you are short of form. (both McLaren and Ferrari did) It will just mean they will have to make sure these first few races are the only ones they are short of pace in.

While the whole "McLaren is best at developing through the season" comment used to be true, it didn't show at all last year. They were good at the start of the season, but by the end of the season they couldn't match Red Bull for pace.
