F1 » Petrov could 'win a race this year', reckon F1 legends

Off the back of four points-scoring finishes from the opening seven races of F1 2011, Lotus Renault GP sophomore Vitaly Petrov has been tipped for great things by a brace of former grand prix-winners

granted that petrov has performed better than expected, but he is still wild and undisciplined. he wont win a race this year, and probably not next year, unless some miracle occurs and the top four teams are all eliminated. and the lotus renault has not shown the speed required to win a race on merit, and will be handicapped even further by the latest interpretation of rules.

I was a sceptic when renault took him on at the end of 09 but he is there on merit. Some of his starts are incredible and his one lap pace has stepped up. Heidfelds no world champion but he is record breakingly consistent and worthy team-mate to some very good drivers and Petrovs out-done him most of the year. I wish some of the idiots that come on here would actually watch whats going on on weekends than type a load of random crap that just isn't true. Sure a race win is probably a step too far at the moment but go on my son!

I'm a Petrov fan but even I would be surprised if he took a win this year, at least without a LOT of luck.
The Renault just isn't quite there.

That said, given his overall lack of experience (less than most at this level) I think he has done extremely well and WILL get a win under his belt before long.
Maybe not this year but I don't think he needs to worry quite so much about a ride for next year now.
Maybe then, if the car is competitive.

Very unlikely given that Renault will likely suffer more than most from the engine mapping and diffuser ban. What he has done is improve from last season and out perform his teamate, not difficult given that Heidfeld has never really lived up to his nickname "Quick" and is also extremely inconsistant. I think Mansell has been playing too much golf and should get out more.
