F1 » Heidfeld: Vettel can be beaten – but not by Webber

Nick Heidfeld has conceded that he is 'surprised' by how much his former team-mate Mark Webber has struggled against Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull Racing in F1 2011 - but he argues that his fellow German is beatable

vettel is not an 8 tenths better driver than webber, why is it he was closer at valencia? maybe the changes to the engine managment regs? has a big bearing on how the blown defuser works in qually if you have a more agressive program than your team mate? this year mark has not got in the way of what helmut marko wants for the driver he manages, so maybe the reg changes might even help mark close the gap even more, bring on silverstone!!

Webber has a good track record against teammates but I think he has met his match against Vettel/Marko

2002 - Webber beat Young and Davidson combined
2003- Webber beat Pizzonia and Wilson combined
2004 - Webber beat Klien
2005 - Webber beat Heifield
2006 - Webber beat Rosburg
2007 - Coultard Beat Webber
2008 - Webber beat Coultard
2009 - Vettel beat Webber
2010 - Vettel beat Webber

Webber is a b-grader and always has been - never won anything in Australia in karts or Formila Ford - and never won a title on his way to F1 - pure chicnaery that he even got past F.Ford - the 3 drivers that beat him in autralian Formula Ford would have been better in F1 - F1 has no proper talent ID system - only 10% of the drivers at any given time deserve to be there - the rest paid!

Webber has a chance by the numbers but I think if anyone is going to beat Vettel it won't be him. As much as I like Webber, Vettel has proven to be consistently a bit faster and that is enough. And if the upcoming changes do hurt RBR more than other teams, I find it unlikely that Webber will benefit.

As for the above comment about how pay drivers don't deserve to be in the sport- this is rubbish and history shows that without pay drivers we might not have a sport. We almost certainly would not have had some of the best drivers in F1 behind the wheel!

Smaller teams need the money badly and all teams benefit from drivers who bring cash and sponsors with them. A few pay drivers ascend to greatness, many compete near the top for years, winning races and some have very short-lived F1 careers for a reason.
No matter how much money a driver brings, if they can't hang they lose the ride.
