F1 » Liuzzi penalised after 'torpedoing' Rosberg, Petrov

Vitantonio Liuzzi: I had a good start getting past both Virgins, Lotuses and Daniel [Ricciardo, my team-mate] but then I went for another overtaking manoeuvre and got closed out. That put me into the grass and once I was there I tried to slow down but completely lost control of the car and unfortunately hit other cars. I am really sorry for Petrov, Rosberg and the other drivers who were forced to retire because of this.

@ taz

I think you missed Binza's irony.

Why do the stewards see fit to punish mistakes? What gain is there from penalising a driver who's only crime is to lose control of a 200mph f1 car. Penalise for dangerous driving and cheating, not errors of judgement.

mrqwerty. talk about irony!

seriously,as i said on another thread, have a look at the incident. kovi DID move over on tonio, so really blame sould be shared. some are calling for penalties for alonso for bushing seb slightly on to grass. yet kovi can push tonio totally onto grass, and escaped penalty. maybe because it was the first corner??

Yeah, not like me to miss that.

Had spent 4 hours trying to debug the worst piece of code by an American Phd student genius who can't figure the difference between 0 and 1 and boolean.... and he says he's a maths genius..................grumble.

Tonio was indeed pushed on the grass by another car but I guess the BBC lobby decided to look elsewhere...

Those kinds of accident are bound to happen given the configuration of the start.

@MrQwerty - errors of judgement need to be penalised so that the errors are reduced in the future. The result of Liuzzi's error of judgement could very easily have had disastrous consequences for Rosberg if he'd spun the full 180 degrees and presented a gearbox to the Mercedes rather than a sidepod.

Yes, he was squeezed, however the appropriate choice would have been to back out and get four wheels on the track before braking. Any idiot driver knows not to brake hard with such a massive lateral imbalance in grip. 10 out of 10 times that is going to end with you facing the way you came from. He should absolutely be penalised for making such a blatantly stupid decision.

Not that are 5 places behind Liuzzi at any given moment. Perhaps a 1 place penalty at 5 races?

Errors of judgement are just that: errors. How long do you think Liuzzi had to make a decision there? It was about instinct, he didn't have time to weigh up the pros and cons of the situation and make a calculated decision. Why will a five place penalty at the next race make any difference if he finds himself in exactly the same situation again? I think it is ridiculous to punish a mistake by Liuzzi but let Schumacher get away scot free with weaving around in the braking zone. Now that is something that could reduce danger if it were penalised.

Starting dead last and then bull rushing the back of the grid into the first turn was stupid. Overly opptimistic to go from last to 15th on the grid because you ran up in the pack looking for a hole. For sure in the piece of crap he is driving in. It was totally stupid to think he could Rambo the grid and not pay for it.

rob. all drivers try to make up places by the first corner. lulu does it, schumi does it, so why shouldnt tonio? i think that in every race you watch, you will see some on the grass, and others pushed wide. ok, you cant win the race on the first corner, but a good position sure helps.
tonio had a good start and was passing other slow starters. schumi jumped several slow starters, as did ferdi. its all part of the race. the trick is to not get caught out.

I am ok with a midpacker taking a place or two. But starting in the back with a car that barely makes the 107 percent rule is crazy. You don't qualify last and expect to make up 5-8 positions before the first turn. No excuse for him at all. He had a good start my rear. There is a reason he is in the very back. The car sucks. He tried to be a hero and quickly became a zero. Lucky for him the penalty is nil. He can try it again next race.
