Williams loss and McLarens gain. I am a great fan of Williams and hope they come back. But Parr is doing great damage to the team and the biggest own goal was letting Michael take the fall for poor results. Hopefully McLaren will give Sam the freedom to operate, rather than being constantly constrained by tight budgets and Patrick Head, and he will flourish and prove he is one of the best. Williams will never know how good Michael was for them. He worked under constant change, unrealistic expectation and constraint and for my money did a remarkable job throughout. I hope he has a postive start at McLaren and each party benefit from this move.

In 2003 Williams took 2nd place in Constructors Championship with 144 points. Then Sam Michael took over as Technical Director in 2004.

2003 2nd with 144points
Sam Michael took over
2004 4th,
2005 5th,
2006 8 th,
2007 4th,
2008 8th,
2009 7th,
2010 6th,
2011 9th, with just 5 points so far.

Maclaren have made a Wrong Move.

Wow, he fell on his Gucci slip-on feet didn't he ? Irrespective of who was completely to blame for abysmal results for Williams, who lets face it we all love, be it him, Parr or Head, to get a job in Woking at that level is a massive slice of good fortune. I think the man's not up-to it but hats off to his networking/interview skills.

@ Richard

I don't see it as a mistake and that is completely unbiased.

Sam may now have the budget and resources to display his expertise

Williams have struggled for a long period on a tight budget and now they have added further burden by satisfying shareholders in lieu of placing their face in the sponsor pool.

Williams Engineering on the latest results showed a profit but not a significant one when based on turnover. This team has lost its way and until such time its debt is negated it will continue to struggle

Very difficult to gauge Michaels' performance if you consider two facts. First, Ruben's Comment on Sam being totally unassisted caught my attention. Second, Williams have struggled with engine's choice for quite some time. Let's see how it all plays next year.

Why is it that Williams have left him in place since May, and even now when an announcement has been made on where he going, they are not putting him on Gardening Leave. Maybe they figure that McLaren have nothing to learn from Williams and so no loss. Any ideas?
