So Vergne posts a time half a second slower than Seb's pole time and thats "impressive" ?
Didn't Dan Ricciardo post a time 1.3 seconds faster than Seb's pole time last year at this Young Driver Test ?
Does that make Dan's effort "Super Mega impressive" then ?

Except that you have to look at the conditions of the day! And this guy was a full 2 seconds ahead of the other guys...Now that is impressive !

Hamilton is faster than HRT - Unregistered

You cant compare these times between Vettel, Ricciardo and Vergne properly. Different daytime, outside temperature and track temperature, fuel loads, tires, setup, rubber on track ..............
Ricciardo for example set his time when it was hottest time of the day and on a fully rubbered track after the 6. day of F1 cars driving there.

Its useless to try and draw any final conclusions from those times. Torro Rosso will have Ricciardo and Algu next year and for Vergne they will buy a seat at HRT.

@Matt - you're a bit off the pace dude. @Tom & @Hamilton is faster... are correct, it's only apples & apples if you're comparing times in the same session. The key point for Vergne is that he was 1.9 seconds faster than Sam Bird (being next quickest, in a Mercedes of all things - what's with that?). On pole, Vettel was 0.141 faster than Hamilton on P2.

Being the meganerd that I am, I've tried to compare apples and apples across the field. Using the fastest time set in the test as a percentage of that same team's fastest quali time, we should get an IDEA (in no way is this conclusive) of the quality of the young driver in the same machinery as the regular driver. Percentages are x.xx% off quali time.

Vergne - RBR - 0.44%
Clos - HRT - 0.65%
Chilton - FI - 0.79%
Razia - Lotus - 0.93%
Bird - Merc - 1.11%
Gutierrez - Sauber - 1.15%
Bianchi - SF - 1.22%
Wickens - Renault - 1.27%
Wickens - Virgin - 1.34% (very consistent at 0.07% variation in 2 very different cars)
Bortolotti - Williams - 1.47%
Ceccon - STR - 2.58%
Turvey - McLaren - 2.85%
Paffet - McLaren - 3.08% (yikes. This guy is a long time Macca test driver, he should be at the top of this list)

I'm not discounting the driver, he's no doubt a good driver to post a time like that. However, you have to point to the great car he was in once again. There is no way in hell he'd be able to do that in a Ferrari or a McLaren which seem to be much harder to set up to get the best out of.

Torro Rosso's lineup for 2012 will be Alguersuari and Jean-Eric Vergne. Personally I think STR should stick with both Jaime and Buemi, both are coming into their own and producing solid results, something the team need. If I was Mateschitz I would front some money to HRT and have Riciardo and Vergne at HRT.

@JaredF1 - No it wont, it will be Ricciardo and Alguersuari. Why would Vergne get a Torro Rosso seat ahead of Ricciardo? Ricciardo now has F1 race experience and is just further along in his driver development.

And why would Red Bull want to put their two star up-and-coming drivers at the very back of the grid? STR is the Red Bull junior team, they don't need HRT as the Torro Rosso junior team (or Red Bull junior junior team??). Buemi will be out in 2012, and well he should be as he has had plenty of time to impress and not delivered. In today's F1 you can't take 3 seasons to finally "come into your own".
