F1 » F1 Driver of the Year vote: 1st

He had shown glimpses in 2010 of what his move to McLaren may produce, but Jenson Button proved that he was no one-hit wonder as he took control of the team en route to runners-up honours in the 2011 F1 world championship - and top spot in your F1 Driver of the Year poll

I think the poll reflects not only driving skill, and lets face it JB does have plenty, but also the way you conduct yourself. Button showed no nasty traits, was an absolutely excellent role model for young fans, and yes of course in a predominantly UK based site he will have an advantage as would Ferdy in Spain, Webber in Oz, Vettel in Germany etc. etc.

The poll reflects the feelings of the pollsters just about everything that concerns the drivers polled and that includes driving skills and behaviour through the season polled, past performances doesn't have any effect on the poll as the poll was all about this year.

Its laughable when Vettel who blew away everyone came second but a driver who failed to secure one pole position in the last 2 years is voted driver of the year.... Yes Jenson "The DRS" Button had his best year, how ironic that the driver who had the worst year ever (Lewis) both had 3 wins each? Vettel was almost perfect in his driving he takes the car to his limit.... without a DRS or KER am sorry Button is nothing!

I think Button had a great season and deserves to be in the top 2, but personally I'd have Vettel first. I think what this poll shows is that a number of drivers were voted down (as much likely due to the animosity shown by their fans) compared to other more generally liked drivers. Some people don't like Vettel, and that was enough to drop him below Button who is generally recognised as one of the gentlemen of the sport.

Same happened to Webber and Hamilton, who really should have both been in the top 6 or so. Neither had a great season, but Hamilton took 3 wins and Webber pulled off some of the passes of the season. All in all, 2011 was a good season, and I can't wait for 2012!

I would of had Alonso 1 and Button 2, only because i belive Button has benefited from the quicker wearing Pirelli tyres as he is naturally easier on his tyres than anyone else, but hey a generally a good poll.

As for Vettel he has driven the quickest car around a f1 circuit fast, and as a result has destroyed the rest. Unfortunately i think it is not accurate to judge drivers when one is driving a Mini Boxer and the other is driving an M3 and trying to compare their skills, as the x Feraari team principal said "Ferrari has not been bad this season it is the RB7 that has been so dominant".

As I said, it is immaterial if one agrees or not with the poll, it looks like the pollsters wanted to send a strong massage in no uncertain way to Lulu, as a result of the pollster's strong massage some drivers had an unfair/undeserved gain and some had an unfair/undeserved loss.

sunny. i agree with you. such polls are totally meaningless, as the fans of any particular driver (especially if he is a brit) will inundate the site with votes. however what you said about lulu is telling. the brit fans have deserted lulu in a big way. he had his day in the sunshine, but time moves on.
it is hard to understand the fact that vettel was not voted the best. as ronnie quotes the ferrari comment, "the rb7 has been so dominant". why has it been dominant? largely due to the driver, after all webber was not able to shine in it. remember when the ferrari was dominant? even irv abd barro were able to win in it. now, THAT was dominance, irrespective of driver.
have a happy new year!
